We’re big fans of thermography, but like any health tool, it’s not perfect, and it’s not meant to do everything. While thermography has many benefits, it’s also important to know what it can’t do.
Here’s a quick, honest look at the limitations of thermography so you can make informed decisions about your care.
It Doesn’t Diagnose
Thermography is a screening tool. It shows functional changes, like inflammation or abnormal blood flow, but it doesn’t give a diagnosis. It’s best used alongside other clinical tools, not instead of them.
If your scan picks up something unusual, it’s a sign to investigate further with your medical provider.
It’s Not a Replacement for Mammograms
Thermography is great for showing early physiological changes in breast tissue, especially in dense breasts. But it doesn’t replace structural imaging like mammograms or ultrasounds, which can detect physical lumps and masses.
Using both together gives you a more complete picture.
Results Can Be Inconclusive for Some
Certain factors, like breast implants, very large or dense breasts, or even lung-related issues, can sometimes affect the clarity or accuracy of results. We’ll always let you know if something seems unclear or if a follow-up is recommended.
It’s Only as Good as the Interpretation
The camera takes the picture, but it’s the interpretation that really matters. That’s why we use certified medical thermologists to review each scan. Not every provider does, so be sure you’re working with a trusted source.
So, Why Use It?
Even with limitations, thermography is a powerful early warning system. It’s safe, non-invasive, and can show subtle changes long before symptoms arise. The key is using it as part of a bigger plan, not your only plan.
Final Thoughts
Thermography isn’t here to replace everything. It’s here to give you more information, more insight, and more time to act if something’s off. It works best when paired with other screenings, conversations with your provider, and your own inner sense of what feels right.
